White & Case and Queen Mary University of London launch their 2018 International Arbitration Survey

White & Case LLP and the School of International Arbitration at Queen Mary, University of London (QMUL) have partnered again for the fourth time to launch their 2018 International Arbitration Survey.

What is it about?

International arbitration is the natural choice for resolving business disputes because it is able rapidly to evolve in response to the needs of its users. This edition of the survey therefore focuses on the evolution of international arbitration: comparing trends over recent years, exploring current perceptions, and examining what users want and expect from the international arbitration system in the future.

Stavros Brekoulakis, Professor in International Arbitration and Commercial Law at QMUL, explains further:

“In the last 30 years, the field of international arbitration has evolved on a great scale and in a number of ways, including in terms of legislation, jurisprudence and practice. The 2018 survey aims to undertake an empirical assessment of arbitration’s evolution and identify key areas of development. Importantly, the survey also aims to identify key innovations and factors that may impact on the future development of international arbitration, including the role of information technology.”

The 2018 survey explores a range of both perennial and emerging key issues for the arbitration community. These include, for example:

Who should take it?

The survey aims to explore the views of the international arbitration community as a whole and will therefore gather feedback from all stakeholders in the arbitral sphere including private practitioners, in-house counsel, arbitrators, academics and those with experience working for arbitral institutions.

Participation is open to anyone and everyone who would like to contribute. We hope to be able to represent the views of as wide and diverse a pool of respondents as possible.

How can you participate?

You can fill out the questionnaire online (here) or by completing a PDF version (available to download here). The survey should take approximately 20 minutes to complete.

The survey questionnaire will be open from 10 October until 8 December 2017. In parallel, there will also be a qualitative, interview phase.

If you would like to participate in an interview, please contact the White & Case Research Fellow in International Arbitration at QMUL, Adrian Hodis (a.hodis@qmul.ac.uk).

The results will be launched in Spring 2018 in the form of a report. This will both explore the current views of the survey participants and compare them with the findings of previous surveys, and look ahead to what users of international arbitration want for the future.

Further information about the survey can be found at http://www.arbitration.qmul.ac.uk/research/2018/index.html
